Morelia, Michoacán, Oct. 20, 2011.

From the ninth edition of the International Film Festival of Morelia, Michoacán, we recognize the cultural importance that the preservation of sacred sites holds for the indigenous people. These sites hold the cultural, historic and spiritual wealth of the Mexican people. We receive with good expectations the invitation of the Wixarika Regional Council and the Wirikuta Defense Front: Tamatsima Waha’a to the mobilization titled “Save Wirikuta, The Sacred Heart of Mexico,” which will take place on Oct. 26-27 of this month in our nation’s capital.

We consider it to be urgent that the sacred site of Wirikuta receive exemplary protection at the global level, in which the sustainable development of the population move forward in a way that is respectful to the ancient pilgrimages that are directed to this place, pilgrimages so old that they refer to the times of the formation of the world, when the Sun was born. Seeing this, we, from this Festival, make an invitation to society to join in solidarity with the Wixarika people and thousands of others around the world who recognize in this place, the origin of the universe.

It is urgent to protect Wirikuta from the threats of toxic mining and the agroindustrial tomato growers who are destroying one of the most fragile ecosystems of our country and unique in the world for its biodiversity. YES TO LIFE IN WIRIKUTA!
