Huichol Art Sale and Auction at 25th anniversary MAPS Conference in Oakland Marriot City Center, Dec 8th to 12th, 2011.

The Huichol people are an indigenous group in Mexico that are unique in their way of living in a deep respectful relation with life and nature. They currently live in central western México, in the Sierra Madre Occidental (western mountain range). Their territory is mainly across the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, and also in Zacatecas and Durango.

The pilgrimage routes that travel from time immemorial extend towards the four cardinal points through other regions, reaching for example, to Wirikuta, in the highland located in San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas. In the ceremonial singing that the Wixaritari keep alive since remote times, is named and dialogue with the locations and energies of the sacred sites that they visit and worship with offerings, recognizing the importance of all elements for the continuity of life.

In support for the Huichol people and their struggle we will have Huichol art and jewelry for sale in exhibit area of the the 25th anniversary MAPS Conference. Proceeds will go to support Via Lluvia, a bay area organization supporting sustainablity projects in Huichol communities in Jalisco, Mexico. http://vialluvia.org/ and the Frente de Defensa de Wirikuta (Wirikuta Defense Front) http://frenteendefensadewirikuta.org/wirikuta-en-bk/ an organization lead by Wixarika communities with numerous organizations and individuals joining forces to support them in their effort to preserve the sacred ecological and cultural reserve of Wirikuta, located in the desert of San Luis Potosí state, Mexico, from a silver mining project planned by First Majestic Silver, Corp. of Canada, and other mining projects.

A Huichol yarn painting will be auctioned on Friday the 8th at the Kleidoscope Vault.http://www.maps.org/conference/25/kaleidoscope_vault_auction. Proceeds from the money raised will be donated to the Wirikuta Defense Front.

We will be acompanied by Don Jose, elder and shaman of the Huichol people. With the support and participation of Via Lluvia, The Wixarika Research Center www.wixarika.org, Playeras con Causa, www.playerasconcausa.org and the Psychedelic Art Museum Tea Lounge.
